The new Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013 commenced in January 2007. The new Programme builds on the experience of the existing generation of programmes, such as Socrates (education) and Leonardo da Vinci (vocational training), restructuring a range of existing actions into one cohesive programme.
The aim of the new programme is both to contribute through lifelong learning to the development of the Community as an advanced knowledge society, with sustainable economic development, more and better jobs and greater social cohesion, and to foster interaction, cooperation and mobility between education and training systems within the Community, with the aim of becoming a world quality reference.
The new programme comprises sectoral programmes on school education (Comenius), higher education (Erasmus), vocational training (Leonardo da Vinci) and adult education (Grundtvig), to be complemented by transversal policy and dissemination measures (Transversal Programme) and an additional Jean Monnet programme focusing on European integration.
Funding is available to support individuals to find and meet partners and prepare future project applications under Leonardo da Vinci Mobility, Partnership or Transfer of Innovation actions. Grants cover travel and subsistence for a maximum of 5 days. Individuals can apply, with the support of their organisation, to attend an organised contact seminar or arrange their own visit to one or more potential partners in one or more neighbouring countries. A signed application must be forwarded at least 4 weeks prior to the intended preparatory visit to allow for evaluation and grant award decision.

The VOCAL project, promoted by the Institute of Technology, Tralee
LLP/LdV/TOI/2007/IRL – 501
The VOCAL project will follow the successful method and structure of the European Language Award 2006 winning PROBLEM SOLVE project with an added LSP (Language for a Specific Purpose) area and further languages. It will design and test a multi-lingual, multi-cultural preparation module for students undertaking mobility placements in vocational training. Vocal will address the mobility preparation needs described above through a virtual journey developed on a user-friendly website for easy access. Users will be led through a variety of real life problematic situations relating to: travel, accommodation, socialising, working abroad and emergencies in new languages by new partners. The LSP area relating to business, tourism, banking & services and engineering will be covered by the old partners.
The European dimension to this project is based around the size of the partnership, a combination of Western and Eastern European partners – 10 countries, 12 partners and 11 languages with a student body from technology to tourism. The geographic spread of this partnership implies a large breath for the valorisation process.

The Know How project, promoted by the Ballymun Job Centre
LLP/LdV/TOI/2007/IRL – 507
The European technical group on lifelong learning identified ‘learning to learn’ as one of the eight key competencies to be developed in order to achieve a knowledge based society by 2010. However for many individuals disadvantaged in the labour market a lack of understanding and insight into how, why, where and when the individual learns may have contributed to failure to successfully complete vocational training, education/employment in the past. Know How aims to transfer the learning from a previous Leonardo da Vinci pilot project CHOICES into the area of ‘learning to learn’. The project is developing a web based tool which will enable the target group to gain insight into their own learning styles, preferences and capacities, a practitioner manual, a nationally certified module (FETAC Level 3), a research report and a pilot study. The partnership consists of five organisations across Europe: Ireland, Germany, Poland, Spain and Romania. The organisations involved include community based organisations, Public Training and Employment services, Career and Educational specialists (both national and European), a university and a city council. The project aims to target disadvantaged Job seekers/those accessing training/educational guidance and training/educational/guidance practitioners and providers (including those specifically working with disadvantaged job seekers and migrant workers). All practitioner/client-orientated products will be available in English, Spanish, Romanian and Polish.

The eTuition project, promoted by Fastrack into Information Technology Ltd
LLP/LdV/TOI/2007/IRL – 514
The last decade has seen a rapid adoption of ICTs in society and has resulted in demands on the VET sector to incorporate ICTs in all aspects of their activities, not least teaching practice and pedagogy. However many trainers and teachers in VET, especially those who are older, do not themselves use ICTs in their everyday lives, are fearful of technology and are not confident in taking a pro-active stance in adopting the use of ICTs in the classroom. Addressing this issue and based on extensive published surveys and research, the project has adopted the following aims and objectives.
Aims: s Increase the propensity of teachers to use ICT in VET via a programme that delivers competency, instils confidence and builds motivation.
s Develop progression pathways for teachers’ continuous professional development in the use of eLearning pedagogies and tools.
Objectives
The partnership has been forged to benefit from the inputs of an eLearning expert content developer (FIT), leaders in innovation in VET (County Wicklow VEC and Castlereagh College) and FOR.COM (collaboration of Italian, UK, Maltese & Romanian universities) a leading eLearning expert organisation.
